Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle
Episode #45
The Second Hardship
The gang arrive in their next world. Unfortunately they all land in a tree! Fay asks Kurogane if he's going to say anything angry to Mokona but he simply gives up and says that he's used to this sort of thing by now. Mokona does a fake cry in response which Sakura finds charming.
As they all climb down the tree, Sakura's suprised by a rather scary statue standing in the middle of the jungle near them. Syaoran gets excited and immediately starts analysing it for it's true meaning. Almost straight away he's worked it out and explains that the giant insects on it are actually based on real insects which are much smaller and that the statue was used in some sort of celebration to do with crops.
Syaoran says that they should always look past the obvious and find a thing's true meaning. Fay comments on how Syaoran must have been taught this by his father. Syaoran says that he had been.
As they all walk out of the forest, they come to a cliff overhanging a city. Syaoran and Sakura suddenly both realise that they had all been here before! This is the same world where they had met Chunyan and Kishimu and battled the Ryanban and his son for one of Sakura's feathers and the people's freedom.
They all comment on how peacful the city looks now, but as they enter the city they find a major ruckus going on. Sorato is rallying all the people into a war with a demon race! Apparently the demons have been stealing the souls of people on a nightly basis. Suddenly Chunyan interrupts the rally and says that a war is the wrong way to go and that they should find a peaceful solution. Sorato tells her to stand down, but she refuses so he commands a group of young girls, armed with hijitsu mirrors to attack Chunyan. They do so and blast her off of the wall she was standing on. Luckily Syaoran dives in and catches her, possibly saving her life.
Sorato tells everyone that they should leave for now. After they've gone, Chunyan takes them to the outskirts of town to the bridge where she had spoken to Syaoran and Sakura last time they were here and explains that her people are wanting to battle the people from Kishimu's race and that even her friends who she had help train in hijitsu (the girls from before) had turned against her. Suddenly, Mokona says that he sense one of Sakura's feather nearby but it feels very strange.
They all run towards where Mokona sense it but find a battered Kishimu. Chunyan tells her to hang on but suprisingly Kishimu transforms into a round floating object and announces that she will take this form to conserve her energy while her bosy heals from it's wounds.
That night a group of demons who are from the same race as Kishimu attack a group of villiagers by turning them into stone and then removing gems from their foreheads.
At Chunyan's house, Chunyan has allowed Syaoran and the gang to stay at her house. While they're talking they notice that the roof is leaking. Chunyan thanks them for having fixed her roof last time they were here but says that every time it rains the rood leaks. Fay says that Kurogane fixed the roof last time and volunteers him to fix it again for her. Kurogane isn't very happy at this but agrees to do so.
In the morning, Syaoran and Sakura find Chunyan standing outside shining her hijistu mirror at the sun. Chunyan gives it to Skaura for her to try and is suprised, along with Syaoran, when they mirror begins to glow brightly in Sakura's hands.
Inside, Fay is trying to talk to Kishimu who is still in her object form and not talking. His "conversation" iss interrupted by Kurogane who comes down from fixing the roof and says that he senses a strange feeling in the air. A feeling that he gets before a war starts.
Meanwhile, Syaoran, Sakura and Mokona have accompanied Chunyan to the market place to buy some food but the storekeeper refuses to sell her anything. Luckily Arashi appears and gives her some of her food and tells her not to worry. Before Arashi can say any more, Mokona asks her to speak the truth because he has the ability to tell how people are feeling and can feel that she is being torn between what she feels she must do and what she is being told to do.
Shocked and feeling a bit guilty, Arashi admits that she had been told to distract them. They all run back to Chunyan's house and find Sorato leading an angry mob in an attack on her house! Sorato demands that Fay and Kurogane hand over Kishimu but before anyone can do anything, Kishimu in her object form flies from the roof of the house, transforms into her body form and announces how stupid she thinks everyone is. She then opens a huge vortex which sucks Syaoran, Kurogane, Sorato and Chunyan into it before stepping into it herself and closing it behind her.
On the other side, Syaoran stands up and realises they they are now in Kishimu's world.
My Original Impression
Sunday, September 17 2006
This was a rather interesting episode as the gang arrive in a world that's so similar to on they've been to before that all the events that take place are like an alternate version of a previous story which actually made it enjoyable to watch to spot the differences.
It was good to see Sorata and Arashi again with the later getting a lot more screentime though still in the housewife mode that she's been in throughout the series. When will we see Arashi pick up a sword like in X/1999?
The episode finished with a cliffhanger which makes this the second anime-only original story two parter! I love it!
A lot of people are bitching about how they want the next manga arc to hurry up and be adapted which features a LOT of X/1999 characters but that arc hasn't finished in the manga yet here in Japan so if it's going to be in this season, it'll have to be in the last few episodes.
