Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle
Episode #50
Determined Comrades
Sakura and Mokona are imprisoned within a pink magical field. Kurogane and Fay have already been defeating in an attempt to free them and now it's up to Syaoran to battle the man behind it all, Chaos.
Syaoran attacks him with everything he's got, finishing up with a mighty fireblast from his sword's tip. Kurogane and Fay, both barely concious on the ground, comment on how Syaoran's putting up a good fight, but when the smoke clears they're horrified to see that Chaos had used a magical ability to disguise his sword as himself and take the blunt of the fireball.
Syaoran attacks Chaos again, this time in a more physical sowrd attack. As their swords clash, Chaos asks Syaoran why he's travelling with the princess when he is clearly more powerful and also loves the princess. Syaoran is shocked and attacks Chaos with another fire attack.
Chaos commands the fire to come to his aid and combines it with his own lightninght attack and fires it at Syaoran! Syaoran manages to block the blast with his sword but his sword eventually shatters under the strain of the attack and he gets flown across the courtyard.
With Syaoran out of the way, Chaos walks to Sakura and Mokona and removes the forcefield. He tells her that she should come with him now that he has proven himself but she refuses.
Seeing no other way, Chaos touches Sakura's hand and hypnotises her to make her follow him. Mokona screams for Sakura not to go with Chaos, but one look of his eyes sends Mokona flying away.
Suddenly giant wings full of Sakura's feathers sprout from Chaos' back. Chaos tells Sakura that they should go and with a simply hand gesture a cross dimensional portal opens and he begins to walk through it with Sakura behind him. Before they can go the whole way though, Chaos notices that Sakura is in fact crying despite the fact that her mind is under his control. Chaos decides that he will only travel when Sakura wants to so closes the portal and flies Sakura back to his palace.
Nearby, Xing Huo who had been watching everything, reports back to Fay Wang Reed and confirms that Chaos seems to be able to travel between dimensions. She asks him who Chaos is and Fay Wang Reed begins to tell her but the scene changes before we can hear his answer.
In the palace, Sakura wakes up and is suprised to see Chaos watching her. He tells her that he didn't kill her friends and that he wants her to trust him. When his hypnosis powers seem to work no more on Sakura, he leaves though obviously with a plan to get her on his side.
Syaoran meanwhile is having a dream where he's floating in water next to the other Syaoran. The other one's eyes open and Syaoran wakes with a start to find Kurogane and Fay being cared for by Keefer, Charme and Mokona. They ask Syaoran how he's feeling but he simply tells them he's fine and walks away. Fay tells Kurogane that Syaoran may be thinking of leaving Sakura alone due to Chaos being more suited for the job.
Kurogane then gets Mokona to open a communication window to Yuko. He asks her if he can borrow his sword that he gave her in Episode 2. Yuko tells him that because it was payment for the ability to travel between worlds, she can't do what he wants but suggests that he place his faith in someone else.
Elsewhere, Fay gives Syaoran some medicine that he made with his whistle magic to heal him and tells Syaoran that he should stop being so nice and think about what he wants for a change and not what is best for the mission. He says that he knows Syaoran cares deeply for Sakura and that he should do something about it if he wants.
Kurogane and Mokona walk up behind them and Mokona gives Fay and Kurogane a big kiss for being so nice. Mokona tells Syaoran that he'll kiss him when he gets Sakura back.
In the palace, Sakura tells herself that she wants to see Syaoran again. On a cliff Syaoran, Mokona, Kurogane and Fay begin ther mission to rescue her.
My Original Impression

Wow, not only did this episode give us an almost complete background story for Kurogane, but it also hinted at a connection to a major player in the Tsubasa world and with some of the best animation yet for this series! The animation was stunning throughout but some scenes just really effected me. Kurogane's facial shift into madness being one such example of creative and emotional storytelling.
This episode could have easily stood on it's own, but the last two minutes drop a twist on the viewer that not only enforces the emotional impact of Kurogane's story, but also gives another character a chance to express himself in a way we havn't seen before and even makes the viewer rethink what he had just seen.
Very original and completely effective on every level.
5 stars all the way!
