Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle

Episode #29

The Goal of Glory

Continuing on from Episode 28 and concluding the Piffle arc, Episode 29 begins with a brief recap of the final minutes of the previous episode with several extra shots and some more dialogue from the fat man thrown in commenting on Ryuu-ou and Syaoran's driving abilities just before he pushes a button which causes an explosion which damages Ryuu-ou's dragonfly. Syaoran rams his dragonfly into Ryuu-ou's in an attempt to stop it from exploding but both explode in the process.

Sakura flies down to check on them and sees that they both used parachutes at the last minute to save each other. She flies on to win the race and get her feather back. Syaoran's out of the race.

The next main obstacle is numerous giant geysers that explode from the ground at completely random intervals. Mokona comments to Sakura that they have no way of knowing when they'll erupt. Suddenly, Sakura hears that bell tone and realises that she can tell. It appears she has some form of premonition power. They fly around numerous exploding geysers without getting hit and catch up with Kurogane. Suddenly a giant geyser erupts underneath Sakura. Kurogane pushes her dragonfly out of the way and gets hit himself. His dragonfly destroyed, he's out of the race. Sakura flies on.

In the control room, Tomoyo, Shougo and Nokoru exchange information and come to the conclusion that the person interfering with the race must be doing so from the outside so Tomoyo asks for information on all the transmitions transmitted during the race. A few moments later, Faye and Kurogane enter and demand that Tomoyo explain what exactly is going on. She explains that she was the one who tampered with the qualifying race but she has nothing to do with the meddling in the current race. She then goes on to explain that it was her company that found the feather at the bottom of the ocean a year ago and that a person told her that the feather belonged to Sakura, however to avoid political trouble they had to give it to her in the form of a competition. Suddenly, Tomoyo is informed that the transmittions are coming from Piffle Corporation.

Meanwhile, Syaoran and Ryuu-ou have tracked down the location of the transmittions just as Sakura is begining to take the lead as the remaining flyers are flying through the next obstacle, a laser range! The fat man, who turns out to be Piffle's president, is just about to press a button to fire a laser at Sakura when Syaoran and Ryuu-ou find him and stop him. Just as they do so Tomoyo's numerous bodyguards pile into the room joined by Shougo and Suoh and Akira and arrest the president.

Sakura meanwhile has gotten to first place but has stopped at what looks like the end of the course, a waterfall. Mokona urges her to keep flying but she doesn't know which way to go! As if on cue, she hears again that bell tone which triggers another mystical ability to sense the flow of the wind which appears to be going through the waterfall. She flies straight ahead through the fall and through the finish ring on the other side! She won!

That night a huge ceremony is held to celebrate the finale of the race and to award Sakura with the feather. Everyone is there on the stage, with the exception of a few of the racers and Tomoyo hands Sakura the feather which has been placed inside a glass ball on a staff.
All of a sudden the wall behind them explodes and through the explosion and smoke walks Kyle! Tomoyo comments that she knew there was someone else involved. Kyle shoots several people including Ryuu-ou with a stun gun and uses a magical/high tech glove to pull Sakura's feather towards him. As it's floating to him though, Mokona jumps up and sucks the feather within himself, saving it. Kyle curses that he has been defeated just like on Jade World whcih clues everyone in to the fact that this Kyle is the same one as before!

Before anyone can grab him though, he's jumped into the air and through a portal to another dimension, similar to the bad guys in the first episode.

Tomoyo comments on how that other person was right in that there would be two people. Hearing this, Kurogane finally asks her who "that person" is to which she answers "Princess Tomoyo!". Apparently, the Princess Tomoyo from Kurogane's world contacted her in her dreams and told her all about the feather, their travelling through dimensions and of the evil people planning to get all the feathers.

Later as everyone is watching over Sakura resting after getting her feather back, Kurogane walks outside for some air and is followed by Tomoyo. He asks her about the Tomoyo in her dream and if she mentioned him. She replies that she was very happy and that she explained that Kurogane will now know what true strength means through this experience.

In the morning, Mokona powers up and begins to take everyone to the next world, but not before Kurogane gives Tomoyo a message for his princess, "I'm coming home".

Watching them from their own seperate dimension, Faye Wang Reed comments to his assistant that direct intervention doesn seem to work and that he wants her to send everyone to the "Spirit World" as he wants to see how a certain "miracle" will unfold.

They've been controlling which world's Mokona has been going to!

My Original Impression

Saturday, May 13, 2006

Wow! You won't believe this but the whole Piffle arc was wrapped up in this episode making it three episodes long! Niiice! Let's hope Bee Train can keep this up for the rest of the season. While the last episode was a bit slow I'm pretty sure watching all three piffle episodes as a whole will make the whole thing flow a LOT better (as with most Tsubasa arcs). BeeTrains seems to be attacking Tsubasa like a book. Read a random chapter and the story goes nowhere, read an entire act in one sitting and it's a completely different experience.

Anyway, as for this episode as a whole the animation was rather good overall though Ryou-ou did see a return of his one-tooth-fang look from last week that simply looks stupid. Good action sequences, no wierd looking faces I was actually suprised by the explosion at the end!

Something that I've thought about before but was reminded of while watching this episode is that Kurogane and Sakura really don't interact at all. In the scene where Kurogane helps her, it reminded me of one of the final episodes of the first season of LOST when Claire asked Sawyer about the raft. It was like episode 20 or something and the two characters had never spoken up until that point. But unlike Claire and Sawyer I felt a bit of chemistry between Sakura and Kurogane. Call me crazy but I hope the writers do something there... but I know they won't.

Something to think about.

Ah, and guess what? Next episode looks like an anime exclusive world! That'll be interesting to see as the first anime only world on the first season sucked and the second one rocked. I wonder which way this'll go? Seems to feature lots of fighting and a huge dragon.

Today's Crossovers

There were a Hell of a lot of crossover characters from other CLAMP series in this episode. If you feel that I've missed one, don't hesitate to email me at; shuttlecok@ REMOVE THIS hotmail.com and let me know! If you do I'll give you credit and a link to your site (if you have one). Cheers!

Tomoyo: The most obvious crossover character in this episode, and a very common one in Tsubasa Chronicle is that of Tomoyo from Cardcaptor Sakura. This seems to be the first time Tomoyo in Tsubasa Chronicle has resembled her Cardcaptor Sakura so much. Whereas previous incarnations showed her as a rather serious princess or a random schoolgirl, here we get the bubbly, slightly insane Tomoyo Cardcaptor Sakura fans know so well.
This episode also saw the mature Princess Tomoyo from Kurogane's world as well! I think this is the first time we see two same characters in the same scene together!

Chun Hyang: This is the second appearance from Chun Hyang in Tsubasa Chronicle who originates from the little known CLAMP manga, The Legend of Chun Hyang. She doesn't speak or interact with anyone in this episode, though she is featured quite a bit.

Shougo: A X (or X/1999) character returns. This time the oh, so cool, Shougo!

Nokoru, Suoh and Akira: The three boys from Clamp School Detectives return with Nokoru (the blonde) getting the most screen time.

Ryuu-ou: The cool RG Veda fighter returns and Syaoran's glad to see him!

The Announcer: The Announcer from Angelic Layer appears and... announces stuff!

Piffle Mascot: Piffle is an imagined company created by CLAMP and used in several series from Kobato to Chobits though most prominently used in Angelic Layer. Here they named the whole world after this company and naturally the company mascot is everywhere and on everything to promote it.
