Side Story "Reminiscence"
Watanuki is a young boy hanging around outside at school with several other boys. Suddenly he sees a white arm lying in a magnolia tree not to far away. He brings it to his classmates attention but none of them are able to see it. They all start talking about how weird Watanuki is for always seeing strange things.
On his way home Watanuki sees another white arm lying in the road. He assumes that it could be a mannequin's arm but suddenly it moves! Watanuki runs away though as he's walking along a river he sees that the arm has followed him. He stands in the middle of the path, frozen in fear and just stares at the arm. As he's doing so several people walk past him completely unaware of the white arm jutting out of the ground.
Watanuki runs off the road down onto the grass but the arm follows him! Suddenly a voice calls for him to climb up the tree to safety. Watanuki makes a run for it and makes his way to safety in the top of the sakura tree's branches. He then sees that the voice came from a boy about his age.
The boy tells Watanuki that he should throw salt on the hand. Luckily Watanuki had gone shopping that afternoon and had some. He tosses it on the hand which immediately disappears in a puff of smoke.
The two boys begin to talk and immediately become friends. The boy asks Watanuki if his birthday is April 1st like his name suggests. Watanuki tells him it is. The boy then mutters that that day is important to him as well. The boy explains that this branch is his special place and that he is welcome to come any time he wants.
The next day Watanuki comes back and the two talk some more. Watanuki then invites him back to his place. Watanuki explains that he lives by himself and that the land lady gave him an apartment next to hers to live in. As they get inside the boy notices a birthday cake. Watanuki explains that it's the land lady's birthday and that they're having a party. The boy then suggests that they have a party for Watanuki who's birthday is right around the corner.
For the next few weeks the two hang out and the boy teaches Watanuki about the spirit world and how to deal with several different types of spirits and monsters ranging from small cute ones to big scary ones.
One day while waiting at a set of traffic lights they see a weird static filled spirit walking around in the middle of the road. The boy explains that that person was killed in an accident and that it's lost however spirits do move on when they deal with their issues. A serious look appears across his face.
After his first day at school on his birthday, Watanuki heads on down to the sakura tree on the river but is confronted by another white arm. He turns to run but finds that he's surrounded on all sides! The arms begin to close in on him and just before they get him a powerful energy blast appears out of nowhere and destroys them all.
He turns around and sees his friend surrounded in a mystical glow. He explains that April 1st is the date he went missing and that he's glad he could could meet Watanuki and then gives him a bone from his body. He's a ghost!
Slowly he begins to fade away. Watanuki begins to cry because he had finally made a friend but now he was leaving. He then smiles though and tells him that they'll be friends forever!
In the present the grown up Watanuki reflects on his memories of his ghost friend. Yuko then appears and wishes him a happy birthday. She then tells him that they're having a birthday lunch to celebrate! Domeki, Himawari and Mokona are also there and everyone sits down while Watanuki once more gets tricked into cooking for everyone on his own birthday.
Everyone has a great time with Mokona mock-fight with Yuko over the cooked meat.
Yuko then turns to Watanuki and asks him if it's nice eating with people on his birthday. Watanuki smiles and turns towards her and answers with a big "YES!"
